County Judge Jacques Blanchette shared statistics that help paint a picture of the challenge to fund county government. Eighty percent of Tyler County property receives a timber production exemption which lowers the tax roll from $2.6 billion to $986 million. Tyler County has also lost industrial value as Texas Pellett and the biomass fuels plant filed for bankruptcy. Moving in to residential property, 60 percent of the residences are owned by people who qualify for additional exemptions because they are 65 or older or are disabled. After all of the exemptions against total value, it's really a de minimum amount that we actually have the capability to levy tax on, Blanchette said. It affects those who are not exempted out. Rural Texas communities provide most of the nation's food, fuel and fiber. The hospital and county government provide jobs to people who support local businesses, schools, churches and nonprofit groups.
